The North East Regional Institute of Education (NERIE) stands amidst the natural grandeur in Umiam village, which is about 20 kms away from Shillong city. Like other constituent units of the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT), New Delhi, this Regional Institute of Education too, caters to the educational needs of the eight states of the North East- Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim and Tripura. Its history dates back to the year 1992, when the 'Task force' of the NCERT headed by Madhuri Shah recommended for the setting up a Regional College for the NCERT in the North East. The first step taken in this regard, was in the year 1995, when the then Field Units of the NCERT at Guwahati and Shillong were amalgamated into one to form the North East Regional Institute of Education at Shillong. At that time, Prof C.L Anand, the then Vice Chancellor of Arunachal University, was instrumental in preparing the blue print to set up the Institute. The NERIE continued to function as a Field Office for about ten years.

Library

LibraryThe NERIE library is a section headed by Dean of Instructions. It has a collection of more than 8000 books on subjects related to Education, English, Science, Social Science and also books on different languages including Hindi, Urdu, Bengali, Khasi, Mizo, Assamese and Garo.

STUDIO

The studio was setup in NERIE as part of the NCERT project in the year 2015 with the aim to develop quality e-content materials for school children, teachers and teacher-educators. The Studio is well-furnished and well-equipped for providing teleconferencing and broadcasting services. The studio staff is rigorously working on various projects and providing final e-content materials to CIET, NCERT for uploading on NROER, SWAYAM etc.

ICT Lab

The institute has a full-fledged ICT (Information and Communication Technology) Laboratory with 30 high-end computers. The systems are installed with both Linux and Windows OS. Use of FOSS (Free and Open Source Software) are always encouraged in the ICT Lab. The systems are centrally managed by a domain server. The lab also is having the following facilities.

Classroom Library

To stay ahead with the advanced technologies of teaching methodologies, the institute has set up 5 smart classrooms to impart quality education via ICT tools and technologies for the students or participants. The infrastructure consists of 360 degree movable PTZ cameras for recording sessions and projection, 2 Nos of wireless microphones for hands free communication and 4 wall mounted Dolby Speakers for showing e-learning videos, short Wave high quality Projector for visual presentation.

The Training & Placement Cell facilitates the process of placement of students passing out The Training and Placement Cell of our institute vigorously endeavors at shaping up the career prospectus of its students by exposing them to the actual world of work through a close rapport and liaison with industry and business houses .It extends hand holding support to its student for their appropriate placement on completion of their course of studies from the college .It acts as a two way bridge between the faculty / students of institute and the industry, which helps in flow of academic knowledge from institute and knowledge of practical operations and latest trends and techniques from the industry. This helps in meeting the dynamically changing demands of the industry/ workplace . The Training and Placement team comprises of T&P coordinators from each department, who submit proposals and recommendations pertaining to Training & Placemen needs of their respective departments .
