Jamia Millia Islamia was came into existence in 1988 by an act of the Indian Parliament. In Urdu language, Millia means ‘National’ and Jamia means ‘University'. The nightingale of India, Sarojini Naidu said Jamia Millia was built up by stone by stone and sacrifice by sacrifice. The story of the university growing step by step from a small institution to a central university located in New Delhi. In the birth of Jamia two dominant trends joined hands and contributed under the colonial British rule. The two trends gravitated together in the political climate of 1920 with Mahatma Gandhi as a catalyst.
University covers all aspects of education from schooling to post-doctoral education which include under-graduate, post-graduate, M.Phil/ Ph.D programs and become an ensemble of a multilayered educational system. It has 38 teaching and research departments in 9 faculties of learning with 27 centres of learning and research. To actualize their potential they use creative space of Jamia and attract brightest young minds from all over the country.
