Rajiv Gandhi University was start functioning from 1st April, 1985. Foundation stone of the university was laid on 4th February 1984 at Rono Hills by the the then Prime Minister of India, Late Smt. Indira Gandhi. On 28th March, 1985 University got academic recognition from the University Grants Commission under section 2(f). On 25th March, 1994 under section 12-B of the UGC university got financial recognition. As per notification of Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India from 9th April 2007 University was converted into a Central University. By a Dikrong bridge campus is linked with the National Highway. University is sprawling in 302 acres at Rono Hills overlooking the river Dikrong. From Itanagar, the State capital it is 6.5 km away from the National Highway 52-A and 25 km away.
